Pedagogical Philosophy

Rys' pedagogical practice is one where the ‘teacher’ creates the right environment and connects with the ‘student’ on a level that suits them then their learning will grow. This comes about because the student feels comfortable with their teacher. Using a primarily constructivist approach the teacher makes the student feel valued and equal to him or her and both parties are honest with each other and that any ideas or thoughts are not dismissed straight away without discussion. The teacher, using a range of teaching and learning styles allows the student to experiment and discover the way to do things their own, therefore promoting independence, creativity, critical thinking and reflective practice.

Coaching Philosophy

Rys aims to create a culture that demands work ethic but also enjoyment, honesty and equality alongside a training environment that embraces a safe but chaotic game based environment; constantly testing the mental, physical, technical and tactical attributes of players on and off the field.

Rugby Philosophy

Players should avoid contact as much as possible moving the ball with a dynamic strategy to attack from all areas of the pitch with a no fear, high risk high reward mentality. Playing a fast wide open game with the capability to manipulate the defence keeping intensity at a high in attack and attack off the ball.

Coaching Strenghts

  1. Provides tools for the players to cultivate self-awareness, with a foundation of belief in themselves that makes them feel unstoppable.

  2. Capable of building strong coach-athlete relationships, which help develop trust and insight within the players preferred learning and motivational bias.

  3. To create an optimal training environment, which provides players with constant testing and development, mentally, physically, technically and tactically.

  4. Provide players with holistic support outside of the rugby environment thus making their life more rounded both inside and outside of the game.

  5. Manage player’s internal environment and mind-set, providing players with the right level of challenges and success.

Areas of Expertise

  1. Creating a highly collaborative competitive culture where players take autonomy for learning and decision making.

  2. Providing players with Game Based Pedagogy so decision making and tactical and technical understanding become synonymous.

  3. Development and implementation of attacking strategies

  4. Tactical decision making

  5. Skills development and acquisition
